Interesting article on possibilities for non p 5 schools
« on: August 26, 2014, 01:37:12 AM »
http://mweb.cbssports.com/ncaab/eye-on-college-basketball/24662085/candid-coaches-will-power-conferences-in-college-hoops-leave-the-ncaa

Talks about the AAC Mwc big east being non p5 majors that are big time CBb teams who would possibly survive and merge with the  p5 in order to have a basketball tournament. This is a different perspective that could actually benefit mu. All schools outside the p5 would basically disappear and all sports not called basketball football and possibly volleyball would fall of the face of the earth. Money talks louder than tradition. Sad, but we'll see wat happens.

I guarantee hockey would last and baseball in certain areas. Some schools make money and it is run so differently than other sports.  But overall I like this article.  It's an unfortunate projection when it comes to title nine but likely.

Since Title IX is federal, it's not just going to go away. If the Power 5 try and mess with it the feds will get involved. I also think it's interesting how so many people think so few sports will survive. The trend in all sports is more, not less.

Not a very deep article. Just a bunch of opinions from people who have their own ax to grind. Sports of all sizes and shapes will continue much as they do now. This is all about splitting the pie. As for MU, College Basketball structure is fine the way it is and won't materially change. If we have to pony up 150-200k to keep up we will.

The only thing I can infer from this article is that many of the coaches have no idea about the CBS \ Turner contract, how long it lasts and how it is tied to the NCAA DI.  There will be no pulling out of the P5 for basketball anytime soon.

Do the dollars from the current NCAA tournament really matter that much in comparison to the college fb TV deals? Enough that it actually prevents them from leaving?

Yes.  $10.8billion over 14 years, runs out in 2024.  A ton of money....96% of it goes back to the membership in the form of scholarships, championship programs, etc, etc.
