Why do so many MU fans hate Notre Dame so much

I'm probably not as old as a lot of people on this board, but I was wondering why there is so much hate for Notre Dame. I personally don't like them, as I don't like any college hoops team besides MU. I have noticed lots of ND put downs and snide remarks during my time on the board and would like to know where it came about. I can understand hating ND football due to their superiority complex and having their games broadcast on NBC every week. I get that their tv contract pays them very lucratively and allows for them to remain "independent." I also think this gives them the snobby vibe and rightly so. I don't get the hatred for their basketball program...well, why we hate them any more than any of our other rivals. Their program is mediocre 90% of the time and basically irrelevant. I got much more amped to beat teams like UCONN and Syracuse than I ever did about beating ND. Is it because of how old the rivalry is? Encounters of snobby ND alums? Something else? Fill me in please!

My Notre Dame hate has little to do with MU affiliation. All started when I took my official visit there.

I, too, was accepted at Notre Dame, as well as Michigan.   On both campus visits, the experience was such an immersion in elitist douchebaggery that I knew that I could not attend either place.

Let's be honest; Tower and PTM are in the minority, especially these days.  Many more MU students not accepted (for example, me) or did not bother applying. Add to that 0-6 v. ND in bball in my 4 years (yes, mid-80's) and the general d-baggery referred to in the thread, and that is your answer.

I work with a number of ND grads, find them all to be nice, pleasant people.  Maybe the west coast versions are different.

West coast is a different fan. Growing up in Chicagoland, your typical ND fan is a mouthbreathing ginger from the south side.

Boston has a unique obsession with Notre Dame. You can't go very far in boston without seeing a fighting Irishman tattoo. Irish gangsters have always worn ND apparel, and it's almost like a uniform for them. I completely understand the obsession in Boston though because its by far the most Irish American part of the country, and people(including myself) are obsessed with all things irish. Also, ND is an old school catholic institution with a lot of history and tradition. Those things are highly valued in these parts. Most people, especially old people are under the impression that ND is far better academically then it is. Don't get me wrong it is a very good school but many people put it right up there with Harvard and MIT and that's just ignorant.

however, I am not a big ND fan but I also don't dislike them. But I do respect their football program a lot more than schools like Bama, LSU and all those southern schools

This joke doesn't quite make sense.  Logically, according to its premise, ND cheerleaders receive an inordinate amount of oral gratification.  Since jokes of this nature are meant to imply (infer?) the looseness of morals of said cheerleaders, and although the receipt of oral gratification by such a large number of people would indeed demonstrate very low moral character, I feel that if the setup were structured in such a way that the cheerleaders were themselves providing the oral gratification, the resultant joke would be significantly more scalding and thus funnier.  After all, the ridiculed participants in the joke could engage in the alleged behavior and remain "technical" virgins.

As you can tell, I am in a teleconference that is far too boring for a Monday morning.

He was a 1st class douche when he was accepted into ND, and that was it.  As a MU freshman, I learned many more reasons to hate.
