Sandy Cohen's sister commits to MU basketball
« on: August 05, 2014, 06:37:34 AM »
http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/story/sports/high-school/basketball/2014/08/02/southwests-hiedeman-commits-marquette-basketball/13520467/

Green Bay Southwest senior Natisha Hiedeman gave a verbal commitment to the Marquette University women's basketball team on Saturday, according to Southwest coach Casey Zakowski.

The 5-foot-8 guard averaged 17.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 3.6 steals as a junior to earn first team all-Fox River Classic Conference honors for a second time.

She ranked in the top four in the conference for all statistical categories, which included making a league-high 57 steals.

Hiedeman's half-brother, Sandy Cohen, will be an incoming freshman on the Marquette men's basketball team.

In addition to Marquette, Hiedeman also had offers from the likes of UW-Milwaukee and Michigan State.

Following five straight years of finishing 10th or worse in the FRCC standings, Hiedeman helped lead the Trojans to a fourth-place finish as a sophomore when she led the conference in scoring. It was the program's first winning season in nine years.

Southwest tied for third last season, which saw Hiedeman surpass 1,000 career points. The left-handed shooter ranks second on the school's all-time scoring list.

In addition to being a standout on the basketball court, Hiedeman is a nine-time WIAA state qualifier in track and field. She won the Division 1 state triple jump title in June.

A half-sibling in the same HS class...

Does Occam's Razor apply here?
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Pretty sure they're not in the same HS class.

Growing up I knew a brother-sister who were born within a year of each other so they were in the same class. The mother must not have breast fed.

Me, too.  Irish twins.

There's 11 months between my wife and sister-in-law, but different HS classes.  Though a slight adjustment of the calendar, and they would have been.

Nevertheless, I misread the article... though in my defense, it did refer to Cohen as a freshman in the future tense but Hiedeman as a senior in the present tense... and that's what threw me off (thinking it was an old article).  If anything, I would bet Cohen's already on campus, so the tense should have been switched around.

I find it strange that she wasn't recruited by UWGB, as they do a decent job of locking up the local girls.

It seems like it's women's basketball recruiting is a totally different world from men's recruiting.  The women's class of 2015 (per ESPN) has 40 players from the top 60 already committed (including 17 of the top 20) while the men's class only has 24 of the top 60 committed (including just 5 of the top 20).
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Did we take Sandy just to get her? Let's hope High Henry is keeping his eyes open.

Might be a function of the top four or five WBB programs are entrenched as the best, so if you get an offer from them, you take it.  Plus, women's teams are allowed 15 scholarship players instead of the 13 for men, so there's more spaces at those top programs.
