Ellenson brother package to MU?
« on: April 22, 2014, 08:54:37 PM »
Mark Miller ‏@WisBBYearbook  · 4h
Marquette, Iowa State, Baylor and Texas Tech among the schools showing interest in Minnesota transfer Wally Ellenson.

Yes, he's Henry's older brother.  Tubby Smith recruit who never hit off with Pitino Jr. and staff at Minnesota.  Lefty, a track "star" as well apparently (I put quotes around that, because other than that generic term, I don't know in what specifically).  About 6'6.

We shall see what happens.  Seems more credible than some of the other transfer speculation, which in some cases at best have been random guesses at guys that MU may have interest in, vice versa, or both.

Wasn't the story initially that he was staying at Minnesota to focus on Track (high jump I think)?  Am I thinking about someone else?

Is Wally any good...or is this just a long-shot attempt to land Henry?

Wally is a 7'3" high jumper, one of the best underclassmen in the nation.  Needs about 4 more inches and he can make the 2016 rio Olympics.

He should attract attention for the top track schools I the nation, SEC and PAC-12.

I'm guessing he's as good as any other 13th man.

If Henry is as good as folks here say, it's worth bringing Bro along.

He'd be a role player at best IMO.

Id for sure do it under one condition. Henry commits first.

True but he is a Soph and jumpers are late bloomers.

He was 8th at NCAA outdoors last year, highest freshmen.  Top 6 were all juniors and seniors. (Winner was the bronze medalist from the London Olympics, second place was the silver medalist)

Point is he is the real deal as a high jumper, not the real deal as a basketball player.  Focus on what you're good at.

Probably a moot point, but when would he be eligible if he transferred?

He would have to sit out next year.

He's scored 34 points on 31% shooting over two seasons.  Is the high major interest entirely straw-graspers willing to put him on scholarship for three seasons just for a chance to land little brother?  A chance isn't worth it, and even if it comes to fruition not sure he's worth two scholarships.

He can get a full ride for track and field and then be a "walk on" to the basketball team and not use a basketball scholarship.

I thought I read here once that is not allowed -- FBall or BBall have to be the primary scholorship.

Pretty sure Marquette does not give out full ride track scholarships. The only sport does is basketball.

Yes they do, or at last they did in the mid-90s when I was at MU. Even if they didn't, they could choose to do so and would have no problem getting funding from the Blue & Gold Fund.

I think the best thing is to have transfers or red-shirt players that are filling the 12Th and 13Th spots as they sit out the year. Those spots are not going to play, no matter who they are. Much better than having freshmen in those spots that are going to transfer, because they are not playing. McGuire used to love transfers, because thry were not going to transfer again. There are a lot of examples of freshmen not playing much that become very good players by time they are a senior. I think one of Buzz's problems was young players transferring out, before they had a chance to develop. It becomes a revolving door, because the freshman that transfers out is replaced by another freshmen that is going to transfer out. The result is that you end up with a team like last year, because transfers keep you from developing a sound team.

My source is Joe True from a couple of years ago. Each non-basketball sport has a certain number of full-scholarship equivalents to hand out, and they have chosen to split them up into partials.

Even if they did decide to give a guy a full-ride scholly in track and let him walk on to basketball, I am sure the NCAA would see right through that.

No, he can't.  We had the same issue with Marcus West a few years back. He was a soccer transfer from Northeastern Illinois, and was initially going to use a soccer scholarship and walk-on to the basketball team, but he counted against the basketball scholoraship totals.
