Fair enough... it's one thing to play a popular song to pump up the crowd (which isn't really under the control of the students), it's another to blatantly rip off a unique cheer and make it your own...  I understand the WE ARE thing isn't unique, and actually I thought it was a bit ridiculous the first couple of games that I went to as a freshman, but obviously that cheer isn't going anywhere...

on a related note, Wisconsin claiming that Jump Around is "theirs" is the dumbest thing I have ever heard (or any school claiming that a popular song is "theirs")... no matter where you play "jump around," people are going to "jump around," whether that is in Kamp Randall, the Bradley Center, or I don't know... ANY OTHER STADIUM/ARENA IN THE WORLD!

You said it yourself. There isn't a cheer that is unique.

Now that I'm part of the "sweater" crowd I'll let you know how it looks from the other side of the spectrum but keep in mind I was all for it when I was a student.

Keefe's favorite chant from his Harvard days is currently in disuse and available.

"Dispense with these wretched curs!"
"Dispense with these wretched curs!"
"Dispense with these wretched curs!"
Dispense!!!
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

What are your alternatives? Do you want us to be silent during the game?

Right.  Because everything has to be original.

Man, sometimes fans can be such a downer.

No need to defend it, it is a great idea to get a cheer going at the start of the game... you repeatedly have asked for some suggestions, that was the purpose of this thread, and the purpose of bumping it... if you or your group of students don't change it, it doesn't matter to me... I just was trying to provide some suggestions that you frequently would request when trying to defend the cheer to the alums...

Obviously, like you said, it is pointless to have such discussions on this board because it inevitably turns into student/alum bashing... So, screw it, either way, GO MARQUETTE!  Let's just keep it coming with the new/old stuff

You said it yourself. There isn't a cheer that is unique.

I don't know where in there I said that there isn't a cheer that is unique... I said playing a popular song isn't unique, but that's pretty obvious from the use of "popular song"... I also so the We Are isn't unique... so that must mean that "no cheer is unique"... I should get you a "jump to conclusions" mat

I think you misread my post - I said "I am all for dumping stupid chants regardless if they are original or copied from a low major program..."

and for alternatives - why do we need a chant to start a game?

Because then people complain the students don't do anything during the game. It's a lose lose. I for one would totally be in favor of a unison "Give em hell wojo" yell.

I still think we need to adopt the flares and hooliganism seen in greek league basketball.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.
