Volunteer to recruit students to Marquette. Get involved
« on: April 12, 2012, 05:53:13 PM »
In the discussion yesterday where some people have an issue with meeting someone for the first time ever over a beer or coffee (or soda) it struck me that a number of you might want to get involved in recruiting students to Marquette.  Often this does require meeting a student for the first time either at their home or a public place for lunch, wherever.  From the comments yesterday, this may be outside the comfort level for some of you, but it is a worthwhile effort.

MU is looking for Marquette graduates to assist in talking to high school students that are considering Marquette University.  Get involved.  Share your experiences and let them know what a wonderful experience Marquette has and continues to be for all of us.

Here is the link to sign up.

I did this several years ago when stationed in DC. There were probably 30 schools represented at a college fair in Arlington, VA. I was paired up with a woman who had gone through MU's Nursing program. A potential student was with his folks and he asked if the neighborhood was safe. I immediately replied it was fine and he shouldn't concern himself about that. The nurse jumps in and begins telling him horror stories - how she was personally afraid to walk back to her place at night, the night was a cacaphony of police sirens, loutish wailing drunks, and threatening homeless folks. You could see the dude's mother was mortified. At this point there was no way junior was heading to Milwaukee.

They leave and Florence Nightingale begins lecturing me about not painting a fair picture of the campus environment! I pointed out that I was never once concerned for my safety, save for having to eat the slop ladled out by SAGA in the cafeterias or the cleanliness of the glasses at The Lanche. I recall making a comment that the kid did not look like a pu$$y to me so I was being straight. I was still getting harangued so I switched places with Mrs Warthog for the duration of that night. Florence Nightingale, not realizing Mrs Warthog's relationship with me, continued to complain about me, especially my comment about the kid having a sack and not a slit. My bride of course continued to stir the pot with the Nurse and only then revealing the fact that we were married. Florence turned beet red and stammered out some sort of an apology.

I was at MU from 81-89 and never once had an issue on campus and gladly would tell anyone that. My youngest son starts in the Fall and not worried a bit. It really is amazing when you get a whacked out perspective on the area. It is not Beverly Hills but not Harlem. That said, my daughter will be there in a year from Fall and I will worry more about her.

I was never concerned for my safety while there but then I'm a muscular guy. I recall there being the Marquette Escort Service. I called to place my order only to be disappointed that it was something different.

Always start with AAA Escorts in the telephone book. Once you get to more creative names you are rolling the dice. Would have thought a big muscular guy would know better. Chicago guy?

The "Marquette Escort Service" is a No Sh1tter. That was the actual name. I recall there being signs all over campus for it. The Service had volunteers who would walk students from point A to point B. Since 100% of the callers were female a bunch of us in McCormick signed up to serve as "Escorts." The theory was to meet women and there were some dates that came from this noble service. Overall, however, most of the callers were not of "Date Quality" and most of us lost our volunterism spirit after a few weeks.

I used to use the Marquette Escort service all the time to get walked back to my apartment after dark.  I used to  get teased about being overcautious, but one night we witnessed a girl get robbed a block ahead of us.

Warthog, I am hoping you were never one of my "escorts", because that would mean I apparently wasn't up to your standards.
Have some patience, FFS.

It's Robert, not Jesus.
