Title: Who was Our Best Defender?
Post by: TAMU, Knower of Ball on April 20, 2017, 04:54:53 PM
There seems to be differing opinions. Who does the collective scoop deem to be the best defender?

Yes the team sucked at defense.

No I will not add a "None of the above" option

As the early voting shows, there should only be two possible answers.

Extra wear 'n tear on the fingers typing in those other choices.

Markus Howard, because on a team with no defense, the best defense is efficient offense.

Either Duane and Haaniff were the least bad. Not going to say best and defense when describing that team.

I don't see a vote in Markus' column

JJJ was our most effective defender, he used his length and anticipation to create steals  and overall caused a lot of disruption and created runs for us.

Yes,  I recognize JJJ had other defensive issues. However, he was the one guy who actually created something positive out of the defense he was skilled at.

Duane and Haanif get honorable mention both worked hard on defense so that counts for something.

Or, abstaining no Matta.

Or both.

Reminds me of Davante's D-Rating. When the team D's up after a made basket, it's more efficient than off a turnover or live ball rebound.

Speaking of Davante ...

When Rowsey went to the FT line last season, did the crowd chant, "Au-to-ma-tic!"?

If not, why not? They weren't confident that the 95% FT shooter would be far more automatic than Davante was? Or they just realized that FTs no matta?

This team didn't feast at the line like those ones did. It was probably just shock that we got there!

Who is the best defender in say the last decade or so?  Starting from the Amigos' freshmen year forward.

I anticipated these complaints. That's why there's a (min. 10 GP) in the question

Offense was our best defense, but I'm floored that Luke is the 6th highest vote getter. Too many people buying into the MSK mentality.

Luke was slow footed, but it was the system that had him hedging screens. He was a good defensive rebounder. He was our only threat to alter or block shots.

Because we ran an up tempo, offense first style, our defense focused on steals and points in transition. That led to gambling that put more pressure on Luke and help defenders thanks to misses and blown assignments.

Luke, Haanif, and Sam should be the leading vote getters based on actual defense. Duane was also good in a reserve role, but those first three were the only guys giving us anything resembling reliable D.

Gimmee Jerel over James, but this seems fair.

LOL 'rel got steals his first 2 years then coasted off that rep as an upperclassman

James' senior year D was the best lock-down D I've seen at MU since I've been a fan (frosh year '03)

Duane was a fairly good defender. He played hard with active hands, but I thought he was out of control too often (over-committing, too hands-y away from the hoop, and susceptible to little spats with the opposition that negatively impacted his overall defense).
